R-Control Panels have features and benefits that can result in one of the best homes or commercial buildings you can construct. The Panels have exceptional strength to resist typical loads caused by winds, snow, and seismic activity. They are "closed cavity" designed so they block wind and moisture movement, important for achieving energy efficient design. The rigid core of R-Control is made of R-Value stable EPS that is also environmentally sound.

R-Control Panels provide optimum comfort for temperature, noise, and dust control. Heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems are more effectively designed when R-Control is used. The panels are made with a safe, insect resistant mineral that protects the building from wood-destroying insects, offering comfort for the occupants.

R-Control Panels can be used with a variety of architectural designs. They can be provided in large sections, helping to facilitate a timely building process.

Controlled Factory Construction

Pressure laminating is done under carefully controlled conditions. Quality Control tests are made on a daily lot basis to insure consistent standards of the AFM Quality control Program monitored by Underwriters Laboratories Inc.® and recognized by national code and regulatory bodies.

Panels are available in 4' x 8' sizes to 8' x 24'. Standard panels come in the following thicknesses and R-Values*.

*R means resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-Value, the greater the insulating power.

The panels fit on solid plating which is set in place on the floor slab or framed subfloor. Within a short time the shell is closed in and ready for interior framing, plumbing, heating, cooling, and drywall. Roofing and siding materials are conventionally applied to the exterior face. Interior and exterior finishing applications are simplified by the continuous interior nailing surface.

Solid plating is used around windows, doors, top and bottom plates, and panel corner connections. This provides continuous support, strength, easy attachment, and snug fit.

Proven Structural Integrity

A thick core of rigid expanded polystryene (EPS) insulation is adhesively welded between stranded lumber facings to form a structural panel that will not twist or warp. The panel's structural grade adhesive has tremendous strength. It is not affected by normally occurring moisture or temperature and has proven durability.

The R-Control Panel has passed structural and fire tests as prescribed by national building code authorities.

R-Value is stable for the life of the structure. EPS has no thermal drift.

Moisture commonly present in buildings does not affect the R-Value.

R-Control Construction Detail Book

Construction Details and Load Design Charts are available for the r-Control Panel building System. these documents are intended for use by design professionals licensed to give recommendations on the R-Control panel. AFM Corporation's Construction Detail Book contains recommendations and most commonly used construction details for use by a building professional.

R-Control Panels are compatible with conventional building methods and materials. They can be easily cut and adapted on the job site. Details give specific methods for use with truss floors, slab foundations, and other types of construction.

Treated To Resist Insects*

R-Control incorporates a thick core of rigid Perform Guard® Insect Resistant EPS Insulation. Perform Guard is made under a patented process* which uses a natural mineral that is formulated to
resist insects and builds it right into the insulation. Perform Guard has been thoroughly tested, is safe, non-corrosive and non-toxic; this natural mineral additive is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

*Protected under U.S. Patents No. 5,194,323 and No. 5,270,108. Other U.S. and Foreign patents Pending.

Tested against termites and carpenter ants. Manufacturer has list of specific species on file.

Warranty

AFM offers a unique product warranty for R-Control, insuring its structural integrity, insect resistance, and thermal R-Value performance. When you participate in the AFM R-Control Warranty Program you protect your investment.

The Laminate insulation shown on plans and specifications shall be R-Control SpecLam with an exterior skin of __________, (thickness __________), core of AFM Certified EPS, (thickness _________), Panel Size _________.

Provide evidence of third party inspection and labeling of insulation used in the manufacture of R-Control SpecLam. EPS insulation will comply the Standard of ASTM C 578.

Quality Assurance

AFM SpecLam is made under factory Quality Control conditions. Only superior grade, exterior exposure rated OSB skins are used. Core material consists of AFM EPS made under strict third party laboratory monitoring.

Environmentally Best

SpecLam's EPS contains no CFC's, HCFC's, HFC's, or formaldehyde. It is inert, non-nutritive, and highly stable, and therefore will not decompose, decay, or produce undesirable gases or leachates. EPS can be recycled and is safe for WTE Systems and landfills. We encourage you to support recycling and energy conservation.

Application

installation shall be in strict accordance with manufacturer's published instructions, details, and drawings that are part of the contract documents for this project.

R-Control SpecLam Panel can be installed over a solid wood deck or any suitable structurally sound substrate. If a design requires a vapor retarder, it should be applied to the existing substrate prior to the installation of the SpecLam Panel. In retrofit applications, where an effective vapor retarder is already in place, this requirement may be met.

SpecLam should e mechanically fastened with screws long enough to penetrate decking and/or structural members a minimum of 1" and provide adequate holding power. Faster spacing should be designed on an individual project basis.

Approximately 1/8" spacing between panels should be designed to allow for expansion. Wood blocking should be provided to allow for expansion. Wood blocking should be provided at all perimeters and openings. When required, connection splines are provided by manufacturer.

Roofing and/or cladding materials to be installed per manufacture's specifications and recommendations.

Special Options

Perform® Protect™ allows for direct application to metal decks, meeting building code requirements.

Perform Guard® provides insect resistance for the rigid EPS.
